A mouse is an HCI input device invented in 1963 by Douglas Engelbart at the Stanford Research Institute.

It facilitates a user of a computer by pointing and clicking on user interface elements. It is part of the family of pointing devices.

Historically the mouse contained a ball & sensors, which in turn made it posible to track a persons movements on screen. This was the first concept. Derivatives are the trackball, tablet pen and optical mouse. The latter doesn't contain a ball, but measures movement of a person using light.
