  • Internet Explorer Developer Toolbar Beta vs Web Developer toolbar extension

    “Imitation the Sincerest Form of Flattery.” Or so they say. But I don’t know if this holds true when the imitating party is… Microsoft. Sorry Chris, it’s about time to move on to greener pastures. 😉

    Why the sarcasm? Well, Microsoft released a beta of their Developer Toolbar for Internet Explorer. So? Well, that’s what I thought. Why would I install a beta toolbar for IE when my main developement tool is Firefox with the Web Developer toolbar. Among others.
    Just out of curiosity I gave it a go. You can download the developer toolbar beta for IE here. Don’t! If you are running Vista as it seems to crash the system.

  • Opera giving away their browser for free

    Opera logoYou could have gotten a free copy of Opera on their 10th birthday already. But if you’ve missed that opportunity there’s some great news from Norway. Opera announced today it will be offering Opera for free! No more ad-banners and licensing fees. They will only charge you money for Premium Support.

    “Today we invite the entire Internet community to use Opera and experience Web browsing as it should be,” said Jon S. von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera Software. “Removing the ad banner and licensing fee will encourage many new users to discover the speed, security and unmatched usability of the Opera browser.”

    Cutting through the marketing bull: its free now and it’s marketshare will probably rise as it is another good alternative to Internet Explorer. Which is rapidly becoming archaic. I encourage people to at least try it once (or take a look at firefox ;-)).

  • Google Blogsearch & Webfeeds

    At first look there are no orange XML/RSS chicklets in Google Blogsearch. But if you look at the bottom of the page just above the pagination there’s this line where you can subscribe to either an Atom or RSS feed for the search results.

    E.g.: “Thinklemon” search results in Atom and “Thinklemon” search results in RSS.

    This is great stuff for some ‘egosurfing‘. 🙂 But I have to give it to MSN Search. As a search engine they were there first.
    If it weren’t for Firefox’s Live Bookmarks I would just have missed this option.

    Update: It seems that the feeds are ordered by relevance per default. You’ll need to sort your results on date first (top right) and then subscribe to get a feed ordered on post date.

  • Mozilla Firefox 1.5 beta 1 is out

    As stated on the Mozilla.org Firefox projectpage:

    Firefox 1.5 Beta 1Firefox 1.5 Beta 1 is now available for download. This is the first Beta release of our next generation Firefox browser, to be released later this year, and it is being made available to our developer and testing community for compatibility testing and to solicit feedback.

    Note: This is not the final release of our Web browser, it has been made available for testing purposes only, with no end-user support. If that sounds scary, you’d probably be better off with the latest version of Firefox 1.0.

    Installing it on a production environment generally is a bad idea as it will break a lot of your extensions. But if you’re dying to take a look, do so here.

    The roadmap states there will be a Firefox 1.5 Beta 2 following in October. So it should be safe to say that the final 1.5 will be available before the holiday season? *knock on wood*
    Surprisingly *the other browser* is due for release around ‘Mid-Late Q4‘. Are the fox and the e about to clash at the end of this year?

  • Firefox & BitTorrent

    Opera supports it already. And now it seems it may be incorporated in Firefox as an extension. The FirePuddle extension is currently under development and it will be some time before a version for the general public will be available. Probably somewhere around the release of the next Firefox installment?

  • Mozilla going Corporate

    Firefox & Thunderbird Today the Mozilla Foundation announced that the non-profit organisation will spawn a for-profit Mozilla Corporation. Exactly how they will make a profit isn’t clear to me. Presumably by offering paid support(?). But, they promise that Firefox & Thunderbird will remain free, always.

    The corporate domain has already been setup. But there’s not much to see yet. Learn more about the reorganisation.

  • Firefox: Europe beats North America

    According to French market analysis company XiTi the market share of Firefox in Europe is 14.11%. Market share in North America is only 11.78%. But Australia takes the lead with 14.41%. 😉

    Zooming in on Europe, the leading country is Finland with a staggering 31.03% followed by Germany with a 24,5% market share.

    All in all, these numbers are totally different from the 8.69% (worldwide) as reported by Onestat.com in April.

  • Firefox webdeveloper survival kit

    Today and probably the rest of the week I’ll have to work on a loaner. The trusty laptop has to go into shop for scrutiny and hopefully some repairs. 🙁 In the meanwhile I’m looking at this barren desktop of a semi-fresh Windows XP. I’m wondering, how am I going to cram Photoshop, Dreamweaver and the rest of my stuff on this 10Gigs of HD. Not mentioning the 256Megs they will be fighting for. 😉

    Laptop trouble Well, the first thing I installed, you’ve guessed it right, was <blink>Firefox</blink>. 🙂 How else am I gonna survive? It took me a whole 10 minutes to get up and running. Including installing the much needed extensions to complete the survival kit.

  • Revelations part 1

    What a day!

    First there will be no Firefox 1.1. Nope. Instead they decided to skip 1.1 and go for 1.5 at once. Well it actually still is 1.1 but the features warrant a 1.5 bump up. Are you following me still? 1.1 = 1.5, 1.5 = 2.0 and 2.0 = 3.0. Anyway, no real update untill september, or so they say…

    Then there’s the news of the new name for Longhorn, the next Windows. It will be called, brace yourself…, Windows Vista. Come on! SP1 = Buena Vista, SP2 = Social Club?

    The world must be coming to an end…
