Firefox 1.0.6 Released

Just a week ago I posted that Firefox 1.0.5 was released, which fixed a few security issues and promised more stability. Yet today, the Mozilla Foundation released another update to the popular browser. The last one broke some extensions, but this should be fixed now.

   I installed 1.0.6 last night and it wigged out on me. I lost all of my bookmarks. It won’t load anything except the Mozilla site and then the links won’t load from there!! Needless to say I’m more than a bit p/o’d. I had to uninstall,(with a secure wipe), and reinstall 1.0.4.

   Any ideas on what could be wrong?

   Erm… just one of those things I guess?

   Seriously, in my experience a borked FF usually is the fault of an incompatible extension. Starting Firefox in ’safe mode’ (NOT Windows safe mode) usually brings FF back to life, disable all extensions and restart FF. Now comes the painstaking elimination of the faulty extension by enabling one by one and restarting FF in the process.
   Updating the extensions via ‘Tools’ > ‘Options…’ > ‘Advanced’ > ‘Software Update’ > ‘Check Now’ may also work.

   BUT before you do this, try and salvage your bookmarks in your profile first or what’s left of it. Your profile usually sits in C:\Documents and Settings\{UserName}\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\{hash}\. Your bookmarks sit in bookmarks.html and/or bookmarks.bak. It’s best to just make a copy of the whole folder and put it somewhere safe.
